Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions traders ask most. For a full walkthrough of any part of the product, use the Getting started guides on the left.
Getting started
Do I need to be a struggling trader for this to be useful?
No. Profitable traders use it to protect what works. The gap between your rules and your execution exists at every level; the cost of it just gets bigger as your size grows.
How long until I notice a difference?
The first thing most traders notice, usually within the first week or two, is simply seeing their pattern clearly: catching yourself mid-justification instead of at the end-of-day review. Actual behavior change is slower and uneven. Expect good weeks and setback weeks; that's how this works for everyone, not a sign it isn't working.
I only take a few trades a week. Is there enough here for me?
Yes. The daily arc (morning preparation, the coach during the session, closing the day) doesn't depend on trade count. Setup track records build slower with fewer trades, but the behavioral work is the same.
Does this work for prop traders?
Yes, and the pressures that come with evaluations and funded accounts, like trading to a drawdown limit instead of a plan, are exactly the kind of behavior the coach works on.
Should I use it on desktop or phone?
It works on both, but desktop is recommended during the trading session, so it sits alongside your platform. The phone works well for closing the day or the morning ritual away from the desk.
Working with the coach
Will the coach tell me what to trade?
No, ever. It doesn't give market direction, validate setups, or confirm your read. It works on one thing: the gap between the rules you wrote and what you actually do. The trades are yours.
I know my rules. Why do I still break them?
Because in the moment, breaking them doesn't feel like breaking them. It feels like a good reason. The pattern shows up wrapped in justification, and by the time it's obvious, the trade is already on. That gap between knowing and doing is the entire reason this product exists: recognition in the moment is a skill, and it's trainable.
What do I actually say to the coach during a session?
Whatever you'd say out loud to a trading partner. "Thinking about adding here." "That stop-out was garbage." "I want this trade but it's not quite my setup." The coach is most useful in the exact moments you'd rather not talk to it.
I'm on tilt right now. What do I do?
Tell the coach that, in those words. It knows your pattern and what you've said helps, and it will work the moment with you. Nothing you say gets judged, and there's no penalty for a bad day; hiding it is the only real cost.
Is this therapy?
No. Mechanical Trader is a behavioral performance tool for trading. It does not diagnose, treat, or provide mental health care. If you're dealing with something beyond trading performance, a qualified professional is the right resource, and the coach will point you there.
Does the coach see my P&L?
No, by design. It can't be impressed by a green day or rattled by a red one. It works from your behavior: what you planned, what you did, and what you said along the way.
The coach got something wrong about me. Now what?
Tell it, in the conversation. It works from what you've logged and said, so incomplete input can produce a wrong read. It takes correction, and the pushback itself often sharpens what it knows about you.
Trades & logging
Do I have to log every trade?
The more you log, the more the product can give back, but nothing breaks if you miss one. Log it after the fact, or backfill it for a past date from the trading log.
Who decides if a trade was on plan?
You do, when you log it. Nobody overrides your call, and no outcome changes it. The honesty of that call is what makes everything built on it worth trusting.
I broke my rules and the trade won. Why does that count against my setup?
It doesn't count against it; it doesn't count at all. A win taken outside the rules is not evidence the setup works, it's evidence you got away with it. Only on-plan trades build a setup's track record, which is what keeps the record honest enough to act on.
Why does the app care when I move my stop?
Because moved stops are where a lot of damage hides. The original level is kept alongside the change, the coach can step in when a move matters, and your risk numbers stay based on the stop you actually planned.
What happens if I don't close my day?
The day closes on its own and your trades and numbers are kept. What's missing is your read on the day, the part only you can supply, and over time those reads are what the coach and your reviews draw on.
Patterns
Where did my patterns come from?
From your own words during your first conversation with the coach. Nothing was assigned from a template.
My pattern hasn't fired in weeks. Am I done with it?
Maybe, and that's real progress. But patterns quiet down and resurface under stress, especially in drawdowns. If it comes back, that's normal and not starting over; everything you built is still there.
Can I work on more than one thing at a time?
The focused work stays on one pattern, because focused repetition is what changes behavior. Others are still watched, and if one shows up in a session the coach will name it.
I disagree with a pattern the coach sees. What do I do?
Say so. Disagreement is useful, and the conversation about why you disagree usually teaches both sides something. If it's genuinely wrong, it gets dropped.
Account & data
Who can see my trades and conversations?
You. Your data isn't shared with other users, sold, or used to advertise to you.
Does Mechanical Trader connect to my broker?
No. You log trades yourself. Nothing here can see your account, place orders, or touch your positions.
Can I get a copy of my data?
Yes, export it from your Profile page.
How do I delete my account?
From your Profile page. Deletion removes your trading data, conversations, and profile.
I stopped for a month. Did I lose my progress?
No. Everything stays. Open the dashboard and pick back up; the coach will meet you where you are, not where you left off.
